Idris Elba may be known for his cool, collected charisma, but he couldn’t help gushing over his 17-year-old daughter, Isan Elba, at the 2019 Golden Globes on Sunday evening. Idris walked the red carpet alongside Isan (who served as the ceremony’s Miss Golden Globe Ambassador) and his fiancée, Sabrina Dhowre.
“It’s surreal. It’s going to be surreal. I’m so excited,” Idris told ET’s Kevin Frazier. “She’s always been at home, texting me and watching me on the Globes when we’ve been here before, and now she’s going to be on the stage and I’m so proud of her, like, right?”
As for Isan, she admitted it was a pretty sweet gig.
“I’m the Golden Globe Ambassador. You’ll see me onstage holding the trophies, and I get to see cool celebrities; it’s a big deal,” Isan told Ryan Seacrest with E!’s Live from the Red Carpet coverage, adding that she’s “very excited” about the big night.
Of course, having a total pro for a dad doesn’t hurt when you’re preparing to tackle such a huge responsibility. Idris was happy to give his daughter a few tips ahead of the evening.
“I told her to keep her back straight; elegance is presence. Smile and nod politely, even if you can’t understand what anyone’s saying. If you feel like you’re going to pass out, don’t,” Idris recounted his words of wisdom to E!, reiterating, “She’s so confident. I’m just, like, really proud. I can’t help but be a dad.”
And Idris certainly has plenty to be proud of. In November, when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Isan’s role, she responded with admirable grace and aplomb.
“I’m really honored to have this position and be able to talk about things that, issues that I care about, such as mental health, expression among African Americans and my peers in particular,” Isan said in her speech at the Hollywood Foreign Press event at the Four Seasons in Los Angeles. “There’s a perceived stigma and I’ve seen my friends struggle with it.”
Yesterday at our annual Ambassador luncheon #GoldenGlobes Ambassador Isan Elba hosted a panel to discuss mental health issues and more. Check out our @GoldenGlobes Instagram Story to see luncheon pics & our IGTV Channel for a Q&A with Isan herself! pic.twitter.com/hvfPoP4tpK

She added, “We really need to empower younger people to ask for help.”
Isan’s responsibilities for the night also include escorting honorees on and off the stage. Previous Golden Globe Ambassadors include Dwayne Johnson’s daughter Simone Garcia Johnson, Jamie Foxx’s daughter Corinne Foxx, Kelsey Grammer’s daughter Greer Grammer and Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick’s daughter Sosie Bacon.
