In a surprising turn of events on Friday, fitness and lifestyle icon Jillian Michaels confirmed that she and her partner of eight years, Heidi Rhoades, were no longer together, nor were they getting married. It's a split that apparently happened some time ago, but to the world, it's certainly news worth unpacking.
Michaels posted a lengthy statement to her Instagram, but it seems like this is the only statement she'll be making about the split. "Hey Tribe," she said to her followers. "You've been with me through it all so I'm sharing some news with you…Heidi and I have been split for a while now. We've found we're better friends and parents living apart than staying together. Life and people change but our love for one another and commitment to raising our two kids as an inseparable team remains," she said, concluding on an upbeat note that's classic Michaels: "Thanks for always loving and supporting us, the feeling is mutual!"
It's unclear how long Michaels and Rhoades have been separated, and Michaels doesn't seem too hung up on confirming that detail. The last time Michaels posted a photo featuring Rhoades was on Mother's Day, May 13, which could indicate that the pair split up sometime sometime in the past month.
Michaels and Rhoades officially confirmed their relationship in 2009 and have built a committed life with one another over the course of nearly a decade. They built their respective careers and became mothers together. Michaels' relationship with Rhoades also figured into her reality TV show Just Jillian, and her proposal to Rhoades was captured on television in 2016.
Rhoades has not released a statement about the breakup.
The former Biggest Loser star adopted a daughter in May 2012 and Rhoades gave birth to a son in the same month, cementing their happy family unit. From Michaels' statement, we're sure that even though these women have split, they're making every effort to keep their children happy and healthy during this transition.
