Savannah Guthrie’s Today Show Gaffe Was Hilariously Relatable

You have to hand it to Savannah Guthrie: She’s been working in broadcast news for more than 20 years and only now is she facing one of the major hiccups of the trade. Her mistake: accidentally swearing while wearing a “hot,” aka on and live, microphone. Luckily, Guthrie didn’t say anything too spicy (in fact, we’re betting it may be part of your daily vocabulary) but it was egregious enough — for a nationally broadcast morning show, at least — to warrant Guthrie charmingly smoothing things over after the fact.

So, the way Us Weekly reports it, Guthrie was looking over her notes while Today was live, and unbeknownst to her, the camera cut back to her just as she muttered, “Oh, shit,” while on the air. Yeah, that totally happened, and no, I’m not going to post it here and further embarrass Guthrie; go Google it if you’re curious. But as soon as it happened, Guthrie was heard saying, “Sorry, guys,” before the broadcast cut right to commercial.

Later that morning, Guthrie hopped on Twitter to make light of her gaffe and officially apologize to the world. “Check, check – is this thing on? Yeah I guess it is. So sorry guys. Thanks for being kind and understanding. And guess it’s [a] good thing I don’t wear a mic all day. #ohdarn,” she tweeted out to her followers shortly after the incident occurred.

Naturally, her followers were quite forgiving and were able to laugh along with her.

In my view, this whole incident just serves to make Guthrie cooler and more endearing. She’s already a total ray of sunshine on Today, but then she goes and has a very human moment with this slipup and it makes her even more relatable. I mean, who among us hasn’t accidentally gotten a little fresh at work before we caught ourselves? Haven’t you ever gone on autopilot and suddenly notice profanity tumbling out of your mouth?

It’s good to see Guthrie’s shaking off this slightly awkward moment, but if anything, I’m even more #TeamGuthrie than before — and I’m betting I’m not the only one.
