Billy Cosby Hired a New Lawyer That You Might Recognize

Bill Cosby is headed back to trial in November after the first attempt in May resulted in a hung jury. This time around, he’ll have some familiar faces with him.

Both of Cosby’s lawyers from his first trial excused themselves, with neither providing a reason for doing so. His new legal team consists of three lawyers, and leading them is the attorney who got Michael Jackson acquitted of child molestation charges, Tom Mesereau. Mesereau has represented some other famous clients, including boxer Mike Tyson and actor Robert Blake.

Cosby faces felony charges of sexual assault against Andrea Constand, a former Temple University employee who accused Cosby of drugging and raping her in 2004. Cosby was charged just days before the statute of limitations would have run out on the case. Dozens of other women have come forward, but for many of them, the statute of limitations to press charges has run out. Several testified at the May trial.

After 52 hours of deliberation, jurors were excused when they failed to reach a verdict. Prosecutors vowed to retry Cosby, and the next trial begins Nov. 6.

Despite accusations lobbied against him by nearly 50 women, Cosby maintains his innocence and claims that any sexual contact he had with any of his accusers was consensual. Claims that he has drugged and raped women date all the way back into the 1960s, and in a deposition in 2005, he admitted to drugging women to have sex with them.
