Katie Holmes Will Give Up Hollywood if It Means Raising Suri Right

It’s kind of hard to believe that Suri Cruise is almost a teenager.

Now almost 12 years old, Suri is the reason we don’t see as much of her mom, Katie Holmes, in movies as we used to. And it would seem that Holmes is totally OK with that.

“This business is so unstable, and you never really know where you’re going to be,” Holmes admitted during an interview with Town & Country, where she explained her decision to transition away from acting and into more behind-the-scenes roles in Hollywood, like producing and directing. “The thing about directing is I can say I have this window and that’s when we’re getting it done. My child is the most important person to me, and her upbringing is paramount to my work right now. It’s very important that I’m present and she has a stable, innocent childhood.”

Holmes also acknowledges the privilege she has in being able to step away from her career for the sake of raising her child. “I feel so blessed to do what I do, but there’s nothing in the world better than watching your child succeed,” she said.

Holmes has had full custody of Suri since her split from Tom Cruise in 2011. She’s stayed relatively quiet about the dynamics of raising Suri after the divorce — including how involved Cruise is (or isn’t) — but rumors have been swirling for the better part of a decade saying Cruise is estranged from Holmes and his daughter because of his high standing in the Church of Scientology. Regardless of this, what’s clear now is that Holmes is prioritizing her daughter’s well-being, as she has always done, and that’s what matters most.
