Leonardo DiCaprio's Next Movie Role Is One We've All Been Waiting For
The day has finally come. We were all expecting it. Leonardo DiCaprio will play Leonardo da Vinci in a biopic of the artist's life.
The upcoming film will depict the great inventor, artist and Italian polymath’s life in a new biopic produced by DiCaprio’s production company, Appian Way, with help from the president of the company Jennifer Davisson. DiCaprio co-founded the company that also helped to produce Shutter Island and The Aviator.
The Oscar winner has talked about his connection to the Italian Renaissance man in an interview with NPR in 2014. “My father tells me that [he and my mother] were on their honeymoon at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, I believe. They were looking at a da Vinci painting, and allegedly I started kicking furiously while my mother was pregnant. And my father took that as a sign, and I suppose DiCaprio wasn't that far from da Vinci. And so, my dad, being the artist that he is, said, 'That's our boy's name.'"
With this in mind, who better than DiCaprio to play da Vinci? There aren’t many plot details at the moment, but it was just revealed by Variety that Paramount has won out in a bidding war against Universal for the rights to the film. It will be an adaptation of Walter Isaacson’s biography of the Italian artist and inventor. The author has a plethora of New York Times best-sellers for his other biographies of historical figures, like Albert Einstein, Henry Kissinger, Steve Jobs and Benjamin Franklin. Recently, his 2007 book was adapted for National Geographic’s miniseries Genius all about Albert Einstein. If anything, this kind of prestigious track record indicates that the da Vinci biopic will be deeply insightful and exciting.
With all the cool and exciting things happening surrounding the upcoming biopic, one thing we can’t help but wonder is whether DiCaprio will actually be recreating some of da Vinci's most famous works for the film — how cool would that be? Either way, this casting news feels like kismet, and we can't wait to see how it turns out.
