Bernie Sanders Is Actually Related to the Actor Who Impersonates Him on SNL
OK, so let’s just get right to it: Larry David and Bernie Sanders are genuinely related.
The Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm creator and star mentioned earlier this week that he's a blood relative of Sanders, the runner-up for the Democratic party’s presidential nomination. David, of course, impersonated Sanders during SNL’s campaign run parodies. He performed for the primary debates, looked back on the primaries and got a crowd together for the famous “revolution.” And he performed alongside Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton, God bless her.
David was so good at the impression that he could have been Sanders' brother, so it seemed, and Sanders was extremely humble in saying how good David was. But the relationship wasn’t far off. On a recent episode of Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr., David’s ancestry became the topic of discussion for the show’s TCA panel.
The discussion ultimately led to an unintentional finding that David is actually related to Sanders. Go figure. Or, as David might say, "Pretty... pretty... pretty... pretty weird."
Variety reports that the two aren’t immediate relatives, though. It’s more of a third cousin situation. But that's still kind of miraculous when you consider how many people there are in the world, and how many people could have done the perfect Bernie Sanders impression on SNL.
“I was very happy,” David said of the finding. “I thought there must have been some connection.” Um, yeah, I think everyone was pretty sure there was a connection, but nobody really expected that the connection would be familial!
As the long-awaited ninth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm comes back to HBO and guests have already been booked, we can’t help but wonder if the tenth season might have anything to do with the craziness that is Larry David’s life in terms of his literal relation to the one and only Bernie Sanders. Only time and HBO will tell.
