In case you were wondering, the friendship between Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio is stronger than ever. I learned of this fact when I read over Winslet’s recent comments made at a press conference for The Mountain Between Us, her newest film about surviving in the perilous and wintry wilderness with Idris Elba (Side note: Can someone sign me up for that, please?). It seems like it was not lost on reporters at the conference that at the thought of Winslet surviving in a frozen tundra against all odds, she may have been able to call on a certain someone for help and use her Titanic training to help her during the shoot: DiCaprio. And of course the topic of whether or not they would actually work together again came up too.
“This was much harder than Titanic because we really were at 10,000 feet and it really was -38 degrees Celsius,” Winslet told E! News. “I definitely had Titanic flashbacks. How could I not? Freezing cold. Me falling into that cold water.” Additionally, it was not lost on Winslet that the shooting conditions for The Mountain Between Us were incredibly similar to the conditions she filmed under back in 1997. “It was definitely reminiscent of certain other challenging, strenuous experiences I had 20 years ago,” she told reporters.
Naturally, given the direction of the questions about shooting conditions and Titanic, the question of DiCaprio came up. Winslet revealed that she actually consulted with The Revenant star about her new role, which is arguably quite similar to DiCaprio’s own wilderness-survival film for which he won an Oscar. “[Leo and I] did speak before filming and he did sort of say to me, ‘Oh my god, you are crazy. It’s going to be freezing cold. Do you honestly know what you are sending yourself up for?'”
Of course, the one thing that everyone was wondering at that point — or maybe it’s just me wondering it as I write about it — is whether or not Winslet would act with DiCaprio again. Given that they’ve delivered two explosive and well-received performances in Titanic and Revolutionary Road as well as maintained as 20-plus-yearslong friendship, the chances are high, right? “At the moment, no,” Winslet told reporters. “There’s nothing that Leo and I have planned. But as always I would love to work with him again one day but who knows? It might not happen until we’re 70.”
Gosh, can you even imagine what a movie with an elderly Winslet and DiCaprio would look like? Pretty freaking amazing, if I’m honest.
