Kelly Ripa saved Andy Cohen from a scary close call with skin cancer
We may have Kelly Ripa to thank for saving Andy Cohen's life.
Cohen joined Ripa as her guest co-host on Live! With Kelly Friday morning, where he told a story about the time Ripa was the reason he had a doctor check out a mole that turned out to be cancerous.
They were both guests at a party when Ripa pointed out the mole, Cohen said. Her husband, Mark Consuelos, backed her up as she encouraged Cohen to have it checked out. And it's a really good thing he took their advice, because the mark turned out to be a melanoma, the most dangerous kind of skin cancer.
"I had a black dot on my bottom lip and you and I were at a party for [Anderson Cooper's] mom in April, and you said, ‘You have a black dot on your lip, I don’t think that’s something good," Cohen recalled on the show. "It was melanoma and they removed it, and I just want to thank you because you were so dogmatic... The lip heals very well and I really had a chunk removed out of it."
Cohen has always described himself as a "tanorexic," but said that the close call taught him how important it is not only to take steps to limit sun exposure and prevent skin cancers, but to have the skin checked regularly.
"I am tanorexic; I love the sun. And I of course never thought that kind of thing would happen to me, and it will change my relationship to the sun," he explained.
And Ripa shared that this was the third time she identified a questionable mark on a friend, making her pretty much some kind of skin cancer superhero. She also stressed how important it is to get regular skin checks from a doctor.
