We’re big believers that age isn’t a number, but Tony Bennett took his love story a little too far.
In his new book Just Getting Started, Bennett revealed he met his third wife, Susan Benedetto, for the first time while she was still in the womb. He, on the other hand, was 40 years old.
In the book, Bennett recounts the memory, explaining that Benedetto’s parents, Marion and Dayl Crow, were huge fans, who attended a New York City show in 1966. They had the opportunity to go backstage, meet Bennett and pose for a picture with him during the concert.
“As fate would have it, Marion was pregnant at the time with… Susan!” Bennett writes in his book. “It’s a photo we all laugh about, knowing the incredible turn of events that followed.”
Bennett then met Benedetto for the second time when she was 19. She had followed in her parents’ footsteps as a die-hard Bennett fan. She, like her parents, met him backstage after a show.
“It tickled me that someone of her age was so devoted to my music,” Bennett writes. “I not only agreed to say hello to her backstage but asked her to be my date for the evening, and that’s how it all really began, foreshadowed by a backstage photo taken in 1966!”
The two are clearly doing something right! Despite their 40-year age gap, the two have been happily married since 2007.
Bennett’s book Just Getting Started was released yesterday.
