Scientology may be the real culprit behind Mariah Carey & James Packer's breakup
There are conflicting reports about the reasons that supposedly caused Mariah Carey's split from her billionaire fiancé James Packer, and none of them are short on drama.
Sources in Carey's camp say Packer's return to Scientology and his weird relationship with his overbearing business manager led him to end things. Sources told Jezebel that Tommy Davis, Packer's business manager, strongly encouraged Packer to rejoin the Church of Scientology, which he practiced from 2002 to 2006. As soon as he began a "Purification Rundown," a kind of Scientologist detox, according to the site, Carey figured out he wasn't himself.
Jezebel reports that Carey immediately had her suspicions about Packer's relationship with the church, and straight-up asked him, "What is going on, are you back in Scientology?"
Along with Carey's disapproval of the religion, sources say Davis was influencing Packer to stop spending money on her, which progressed to just pushing him to break up with her. Soon after the fight over Scientology, Carey was kicked off the yacht she and Packer were sharing in Greece.
Meanwhile, Packer's side is telling a completely different story. Sources close to the billionaire say he ended things with Carey because of her famous "diva" attitude.
"James isn’t the kind of guy who listens to someone else when it comes to his private life," an insider said. "His relationship with Mariah ended because she is a diva, she has an entourage around her, and she’s filming a TV show, which is a crazy world James doesn’t want to be involved with."
Packer's camp denies that Scientology had anything to do with the breakup, and insists that he hasn't gone back to practicing the religion.
Carey's divorce from Nick Cannon was finalized just days before she left on the Greek vacation with Packer. She and Cannon were married from 2008 to 2014.
