It looks like daytime is the hottest place to cast actors for prime time series. Even though General Hospital star Matt Cohen is no stranger to nighttime audiences, he is jumping networks from ABC to CBS for a new recurring role.

Cohen will be headed to Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders for Season 2. His first episode will be in the season premiere, which debuts as a midseason replacement. He has already been on set to shoot the role, according to TV Line.
The news comes on the heels of Justin Hartley juggling multiple roles on The Young and the Restless, Mistresses and the much-hyped fall show This Is Us. He recently departed the CBS soap to focus on the prime time show.
While soap fans are thrilled about Hartley’s success, he does leave a gaping hole in Y&R because his character, Adam Newman, made such an impact on the series. With Cohen joining GH only nine months ago, it does worry some ABC viewers that he might jump ship soon.
There seems to be a reason networks are plucking a lot of solid actors out of daytime television. If you talk to any performer who has worked on a soap, they will tell you it’s the best training ground because of the fast pace. It’s not unusual for an actor to tackle 30 pages of script in a day.
Hartley flexed his acting muscles and delivered consistently for Y&R. It makes sense that after his turn on Mistresses, NBC found him a perfect fit for its new ensemble show. The same thing seems to be happening for Cohen’s career as well.
However, soap fans shouldn’t worry just yet. Cohen’s new role on the CBS series is intended to be short-term. He has a history with the Beyond Borders executive producer Adam Glass, who is a former writer/EP on Supernatural. Cohen appeared three times on the show between 2008 and 2015 as Young John Winchester.
It’s time for the fans to celebrate Cohen’s and Hartley’s success, because prime time is seeing what all of us knew all along — these guys have talent.
