Y’all, The Walking Dead‘s Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira ship Richonne too

I’m not gonna lie: It’s been way too long since I had new episodes of The Walking Dead in my life. I watch the rerun marathons, I cue it up on Netflix… it’s just not the same. Has it not been an agonizingly long time since Season 6 ended?

The good news is that we are in the home stretch, fellow fans of TWD! Sure, the Season 7 premiere is a bit later than we thought, airing on Oct. 23 as opposed to the previously circulated dates of Oct. 9 or Oct. 16. But hey, it’s happening, and it’s happening in October, and that is good enough for me.

What’s even better, though, is the fact that behind-the-scenes interviews from Walking Dead: The Complete Sixth Season have surfaced, revealing how Andrew Lincoln (Rick) and Danai Gurira really feel about their characters’ recently romanticized relationship.

And, you guys, it’s kind of the most adorable thing you’ll see all day. Unless, I suppose, you’re one of those people who does not ship “Richonne,” in which case we can’t be friends anyway. J/k, j/k. (Kinda.)

It’s no secret if you happened to have read any of my previous coverage of The Walking Dead over the last few years that I unabashedly hoped Rick and Michonne would hook up. When they did in the 10th episode of Season 6, I couldn’t help but swoon a little.

And now, thanks to this new interview, I’m once again high-key crushing on TWD couple.

It all started, of course, when Rick essentially risked life and limb to bring Michonne back a pack of mints. “He had a mission in his mind to take care of her need. That’s kind of that, ‘Oh my God that’s so sweet’ moment — but apocalypse-style,” Gurira says.

Lincoln agrees that, in that moment, everything fell into place for Rick. “He just sort of sees it, and they both register that,” the actor explains, adding, “It’s the most natural thing. I kept thinking, ‘Of course — it’s been right in front of me all the time.'”

Additionally, Gurira confirms what Richonne shippers long suspected, saying of Michonne’s feelings for Rick, “I think she’s probably been in love with Rick for a while” but had been “cutting herself off from her heart.”

Also weighing in on the coupling in the exclusive footage is co-executive producer Denise Huth. “I think it’s just a really lovely moment of these two great friends sort of looking at each other in a moment of going, ‘Oh…'” says Huth. “It’s really, really sweet and really nice, because we don’t get these moments often on The Walking Dead.”

Unfortunately the status of Richonne is shaky moving into Season 7. The last time we saw the couple, they were lined up in front of Negan, waiting to see which one of their crew would be picked off with the villain’s barbwire-wrapped baseball bat.

Suffice it to say, it seems highly unlikely Rick or Michonne will be Negan’s victim (or should I say victims?), but watching one of their own get bludgeoned to death before their eyes could very well impact their relationship.

Or, fingers crossed, whatever happens will simply strengthen their bond, and they’ll weather the aftermath together. It gives a girl hope, you know? Granted, I’m married and all, but in the event of zombpocalypse, it’s comforting to think love and sex and all those nice things we all enjoy could still be a part of life.

So as for Richonne, it’s kismet those two ultimately found each other. Lincoln says it best: “It felt like a grown-up relationship that was always meant to be.”
