Anton Yelchin's parents are doing more than mourning his unexpected death
Anton Yelchin's death already prompted a class-action lawsuit, but that's not enough for his parents.
According to Us Weekly, Yelchin's parents, Victor and Irina Yelchin, are planning to file their own lawsuit in their son's death: a wrongful death suit against Fiat Chrysler.
Yelchin was killed on June 19 when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backward down the driveway of his Los Angeles home and pinned him against his brick mailbox post. According to the Los Angeles County coroner's office, Yelchin died within a minute of the incident. His cause of death was blunt trauma asphyxia. His family reportedly blames defects with the car for his death, and will allege so in their lawsuit.
According to Us Weekly, Yelchin's car was one of 1.1 million vehicles that were recalled because of a faulty gearshift that made it difficult to put the car into park, drive or reverse. A class-action lawsuit sparked by Yelchin's death was filed on June 23 and alleges that the car's manufacturer, Fiat Chrysler, has been "intentionally covering up fatal design flaws and deaths from the defects."
The class action is led in part by law firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro, which wrote in the suit: "The safety issue is real. Well over 300 accidents have already been reported, causing dozens of serious injuries, and potentially the death of Anton Yelchin, a young Hollywood actor who was crushed to death when his own 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled down his drive and pinned him against his brick mailbox."
The Yelchin family's attorney, Gary Dordick, is expected to hold a press conference to share details of the family's lawsuit. The Los Angeles County coroner's office ruled Yelchin's death an accident, and investigators are working out whether the car's gearshift was a factor.
