Mariah Carey doesn’t have many failures in her life. She is one of the most successful singers in history, she’s maintained a career for over two decades and she’s raising two beautiful children. There’s not much about her that isn’t successful, so of course, the one failure she does have is the only one she didn’t want.
In her interview with Complex magazine, Carey said, “I never thought I would have babies with someone and then get divorced. Like, ‘Oh, great job. Repeat your past.'”
She’s obviously referencing her relationship with Nick Cannon, her husband from 2008 – 2014. The couple divorced when their twins were 3 years old, leaving them in the same situation that Carey was in as a child. As a parent, you always want better for your children than you had yourself, so this defeat was pretty hard to take for Carey, a woman not used to losing.
Over time, she did give herself permission to let it go, though. She said, “Life happens. And it was supposed to happen. It’s fine. For them, I wish it hadn’t happened that way. For me, it was. … [singing Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams’ ‘Too Much, Too Little, Too Late’] Guess it’s over. Call it a day.”
Leave it to Carey to sing her way out of a painful situation.
She really has no reason to be so hard on herself. Both she and Cannon have dedicated themselves to being very present, loving and supportive parents despite the divorce; that alone puts their children at an advantage that she wasn’t given during her childhood. Not to mention the millions of dollars their kids have access to… but we can pretend money doesn’t buy happiness.
These days, divorce is way too common to be considered a failure. It is just a thing that happens, and both parents have to work together to co-parent whether or not they stay married. Putting her children’s happiness and fulfillment high on her priority list means she definitely did break the cycle.
