20 years later, Gayle King's cheating husband issues a public apology
It only took 11 years of marriage, 20 years of divorce and a few days of an especially brutal quote in a Vanity Fair interview, but Gayle King's cheating ex-husband William Bumpus has apologized for his bad behavior.
When asked the question "Which living person do you most despise?" in a VF interview, King couldn't help but bring up her ex's transgressions. She responded, "'Despise' is a strong word. I’m not a huge fan of the woman I caught naked with my now ex-husband on June 24, 1990, at 9:16 p.m. — but I don’t remember the details."
In a follow-up statement to Page Six, Bumpus essentially found a very polite way to tell King, "Please stop talking about this alone."
Through a rep, Bumpus acknowledged that he had "dealt with [the situation] privately" and now wants to "publicly apologize for the major transgression that dramatically changed all of our lives." King and Bumpus have two children.
Bumpus continued, "I have nothing but the utmost respect for Gayle and how she handled herself with grace. Despite the situation, she kept our children, as well as my relationship and involvement with them, as a clear priority."
He expanded, as one does in the situations, on Gayle's incredible traits. "Gayle was a great wife, an excellent mother and a fantastic co-parent. I am eternally grateful for all that she has done and continues to do to enrich my life and the lives of our incredible adult children. I continue to be a work in progress and have spent the last 26 years striving to be a better man and father. I applaud Gayle's continued phenomenal success and friendship!"
Asked by Page Six who the other woman was, Gayle commented, "She knows her name!"
