Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama break up after 6 years together
They were an amazing couple, but they're better as best friends: Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama broke up after dating for nearly six years, but the two entertainers are assuring fans that they haven't seen the last of the two together, even if that means they'll attend events as the best of buddies.
Lovato and Valderrama released a statement on social media to let everyone know that they've decided to call it quits but there is no bad blood between them:
"After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship," the statement reads. "This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends. We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years."
Their announcement doesn't follow any gossip about how they've been fighting or haven't been getting along lately. If anything, it's quite the opposite. Lovato recently gave an interview to Latina magazine in which she praised Valderrama for being so "passionate," "manly" and "protective" of her. She then dropped what could have been a hint but probably wasn't: "I've been blessed enough to have him in my life, and not just as my man, but also my best friend."
Best friend. Hmm.
No matter what happened between Lovato and Valderrama and why they couldn't ultimately make it work, there's no doubt that they had each other's backs over the years, and they emerged as one of our favorite couples. Valderrama has been Lovato's biggest supporter, cheering her on during her journey to sobriety. In an interview with Fitness magazine, the singer credited Valderrama for calling her out when he noticed she had become unhealthfully obsessed with what she was eating (she spent time in rehab to get help for an eating disorder). Both have made no bones about the fact that he loves her curvy body just the way it is, Hollywood pressure be damned.
There was lots of talk about Lovato and Valderrama getting engaged, and the two made it known plenty of times that they were in this relationship for the long haul. You can bet we're going to mourn this couple — but, hey, stuff happens. It's obvious that they served each other well and added lots of love, inspiration and positivity to each other's lives. Sometimes that's far more important than longevity.
