Southern Charm's Landon Clements drops the L-bomb too soon — way too soon
Landon Clements did not have a great week on Southern Charm, and for once, it had nothing to do with Kathryn Dennis. Since the beginning of the season, people (Cameran) have been speculating that Landon has a thing for Shep, with whom she's been friends since college. On Monday's new episode, Landon decided to tell Shep about her feelings, and it did not go well. "Maybe I love you," she said, and after choking on his wine, Shep effectively squashed any possibility of a romantic relationship between them.
Shep and Landon might seem like a good idea... from a distance. They are both of good Southern breeding, of course, and they have a great affection for doing what they want, despite convention. The thing is, it's working out for Shep, which seems to be fine for him, although not so much for Cameran, who's made it her purpose to harass him about getting married in every episode of this show. Being single and independent has not been great for Landon, though; she's been pretty much unwilling to get it together this season, at least from a business angle. In addition to getting shot down by Shep and potentially losing an old friend, her second meeting with Vox Media's Lockhart Steele flopped when she came to it miserably unprepared, again. (A website mock-up should probably involve an actual website, Landon, and not a piece of paper.)
Landon has been super mean to Kathryn all season, and because of that, it's hard to feel badly for her. When Cameran postulated that Landon might be into Shep, she suggested that it might be because of Shep's gobs of family money, which is pretty gross, but it's not like that's a new accusation from people on this show. The entire current season has consisted of people yelling about Kathryn trapping Thomas into fatherhood again so she can get his money. It's all sexist and awful, and as mad as I am at Landon for her slut-shaming of Kathryn, I don't want to think that she'd plot to bag Shep because he has a hearty sum of money. Which makes what happened on Monday's episode extra sad and awkward, since she's now perhaps less an old friend and she got humiliated on national television, and there's pretty much no way she's getting a deal for a travel website with Vox Media. (Although, she might have, according to her Instagram?) Maybe her friendship with Shep can be saved, given that his main character trait is that he doesn't take anything or anyone too seriously. Yikes, though, Landon. Bad day. Bad, bad, day.
Should Landon and Shep get together? Do you think she's really into him or is this just about trying to find some stability? Tell us in the comments!
