Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's surprise divorce is quickly turning ugly
Another Hollywood romance has been cut short today. Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp, citing, in true Hollywood form, irreconcilable differences as the reason they couldn’t make it work. The couple had only been married for 15 months, which may sound like a relatively long time for a celebrity romance, but some commenters didn’t even realize they were together.
On top of the divorce, Heard, 30, is also requesting spousal support from Depp, 52. It has been reported by many sources that when they got married, Depp refused to sign a prenuptial agreement in order to prove that his love for Heard was real. Reports even cited Depp’s close friend Angelina Jolie as one of the people who tried to get him to get the prenup. If those claims are true and there is no agreement, there could potentially be millions of dollars at stake.
The filing could really not have come at a worse time for Depp, whose beloved mother, Betty Sue Palmer, died following a long illness only three days before Heard filed for divorce, TMZ reports. The filing seems incredibly harsh, but according to the outlet, Depp has already filed his response to Heard's divorce petition via his lawyer, Laura Wasser, and he's asking the judge to reject Heard's claim for spousal support.
If it all seems like a whirlwind, that’s because the couple’s entire relationship has been. They met on the set of their 2011 film, The Rum Diary, but didn’t go public with their relationship until about a year after Depp announced his split from his girlfriend of 14 years, Vanessa Paradis. They married in February of last year in a small ceremony in the Bahamas.
Since then, the two have faced rumors of divorce, which Heard addressed in Marie Claire back in December, saying "I try not to react to the horrible misrepresentation of our lives, but it is strange, and hard."
Then last month the two had to apologize for bringing their dogs into Australia without the proper immigration papers. It’s safe to say there have been a lot of ups and downs in the last 15 months for these two actors.
While the news comes as a shock to most, there are reportedly two people who may be pleased that Depp will be single, and they're his children (with whom he shares with former partner, Paradis).
According to TMZ, the couple's relationship turned "very bitter" because of a feud between Heard and Depp's family. Not only did Depp's two teenage children, John Christopher Depp III and Lily-Rose Melody Depp, reportedly "hate" Heard and openly discuss it but Betty Sue Palmer also believed that Heard was the wrong fit for her son and thought she was using Depp for his money and fame to boost her own career.
It seems insane that Heard could be entitled to half of what Depp has built after only 15 months of marriage, but I suppose that’s the risk he took for true love. It is sad that it didn’t work out between the two of them, but you sort of have to wonder whether or not Depp was thinking clearly at all. He just got out of a long-term relationship, he married very quickly and he didn’t sign a prenup. To me, that spells trouble — but maybe Depp calls it passion.
