Apparently there's a Taylor Swift Award, and you'll never guess who won it

What happens when you’ve won all the prestigious music awards in both country and pop music? If you’re Taylor Swift, you start having awards named after you... and then given to you. On Tuesday, BMI presented the Taylor Swift Award to none other than Taylor Swift in the second most awkward award show moment for Swift.

In true Swift fashion, she couldn’t let the silent moment pass without acknowledging how awkward it was in the room. During her acceptance speech she said, “I’m really super relieved that BMI decided to give me the Taylor Swift Award, because if they had chosen somebody else to give the Taylor Swift Award to, I’d be, like, kinda bummed about it.”

Which is a totally fair point. If there is someone else doing you better than you are, there’s probably a problem.

Last month when BMI announced the award, Barbara Cane, BMI’s VP of writer/publisher relations, explained that, “Taylor Swift has transformed pop culture through her songs, artistry and indomitable spirit. She has had a profound impact, not only musically, but also through her personal conviction and commitment to create a standard that values and respects music for everyone. We felt it appropriate to award Taylor with an honor that is as unique and special as she is.”

Again, fair point. But maybe, BMI, you could call the award by something other than the first recipient’s name. Because what is going to happen next year when you have to give this award out? Do you give it to Taylor Swift again? This doesn’t sound like it was totally thought out.

Swift is not the only artist to have an award named after her, though. BMI once gave Michael Jackson the Michael Jackson Award. He, too, was the only person ever to receive that award. Which leads me to ask, if this group is made up of writers and publishers, can they not think of a better name for an award that congratulates musical pioneers?

The whole thing is strange, but Swift obviously made it adorable and less uncomfortable for everyone. Congratulations, Taylor Swift, for being the most Taylor Swift Taylor Swift there ever was.
