Will Gardner's ghost could make The Good Wife finale one for the books
The Good Wife fans are bummed that the show is coming to an end, but at least everyone has an epic finale — that may or may not include an appearance by Will Gardner from beyond the grave — to look forward to.
Rumors have been flying that Josh Charles will return as Will in the series closer, and showrunners Michelle and Robert King are fanning the flames of the gossip.
"We don’t want to squash those rumors, because why would we?" Robert told Variety recently. "But there are a lot of possibilities for the last episodes."
But will bringing Will back just reopen fans' wounds that took so much time to heal? His death was definitely the most heartbreaking moment in the series. And though everyone will no doubt be elated to see Charles reprise his role on the show, he might serve as a bitter reminder that Will's death was the beginning of the end for The Good Wife.
There's also the possibility that Will's return is just a rumor the Kings are neither confirming nor denying to gather more buzz around the show. It's well known that Charles willfully left the series and had no intentions of looking back.
And in what capacity would Will even be able to return? Logically, his appearance could only be a brief flashback of some sort. This is, after all, The Good Wife we're talking about, not The Walking Dead.
Charles, for his part, has yet to comment on his possible return for the finale.
Whether Charles returns as Will or not, The Good Wife's star, Julianna Margulies, promises a genius ending for her character Alicia.
"I read it once, and I couldn’t talk to anyone about it, because I was emotionally confused, because I was having so many emotions knowing I was wrapping this character up," Margulies said of reading the final script, which the Kings sent over with a bottle of wine and a note that read, "Alicia should be drinking while reading this," according to Variety.
"So I opened the wine and I poured a wee glass, not an Alicia-sized glass. I then I read it a fourth time, and I then could digest it. I wrote [the Kings] three lines: ‘Nothing but brilliant,'" she added.
The Good Wife airs Sundays at 9/8c on CBS. The series finale is scheduled for Sunday May 8, 2016.
