Less than three months after her husband David Bowie’s passing, Iman is mourning the loss of her mother. She shared the sad news of her mother’s passing on Instagram with a family photo from her and Bowie’s wedding day. Her caption asked fans and media for privacy. “Saddened by death of my mom Maryan Baadi. May Allah grant her the highest jennah. I beg that you respect my family’s privacy during our time of grief #ripmaryanbaadi”.
In a 2014 interview with The Guardian excerpted by Page Six, Iman shared some kind words about her mother’s powerful political background. “My mother was an activist, so was my father,” she said. “They came from a generation of young Somalis who were actively involved in getting independence for Somalia in 1960… So I remember when I was 5 how busy our house was. People would come in the middle of the night, meetings after meetings, and protests and all that. I grew up in the midst of all of that. And she instilled that in me. The fact that nobody can take your self-worth unless you give your consent.”
In addition to the heartbreaking loss of her husband of 24 years, Iman also lost her longtime hairdresser Teddy Antolin this year. Antolin introduced Iman to Bowie in 1990.
