For fans of General Hospital’s Rebecca Herbst, it’s all going to be OK. The last few months have been tense for TV viewers of the ABC daytime show wondering if the actress would exit the series after 19 years on the show.

On March 11, Herbst was able to confirm that her new contract was finally negotiated and she will stay on as nurse Elizabeth Webber. She spoke to Michael Logan at TV Insider about staying with the soap and those pesky rumors about jumping ship to another daytime show.

Herbst cleared the air right away with Logan about the direction of her character and the storyline — she was always on board with the writers.

"There was a lot of speculation that I was unhappy at GH, which was never the case. I love my job. I love the people I work with," she said. “I’m an actor. I go in and do what’s on the page and then I go home. I don’t believe it’s my place to dictate storyline. People were saying that I was upset about the Jake/Jason story when, in fact, I embraced it. It ended up being a lot of fun.”

The actress wanted to stay with the show, but she had to keep tight-lipped during contract negotiations, which wasn’t easy to do.

“By not saying something, I was kind of making it worse. It was so hard keeping quiet,” she admitted. "This was just a really long and difficult and highly emotional negotiation this time.”

Herbst refused to be specific with Logan about the sticking points of her contract, but she likened the terse discussions to family fighting and then coming back together in the end. It did come down to the last minute though. Her contract expired over the weekend of March 12 and 13.

“[My contract] was coming up this weekend — Saturday or Sunday, I can’t remember which," she shared. “So it was down to the wire.”

There were rumors that Herbst was headed to another soap like NBC’s Days of Our Lives to replace Kate Mansi as Abby, or even MacKenzie on The Young and the Restless.

“I will say that other shows definitely showed interest in me. They showed a lot of support for my leaving GH, if that’s what I ultimately chose to do. I just shouldn’t name any one particular show,” she explained. “The fact that I received interest from the other soaps only added to the speculation I was unhappy. Word got around. I guess when you’ve been on a show for nearly 19 years, other shows respect that.”

Even her husband Michael Saucedo’s cryptic social media post added fuel to the fire that she was leaving. He later reached out to SheKnows to refute that report.

Everyone was wondering what was happening with Herbst’s contract.

Ultimately, she chose to keep Port Charles her home.

“Sure, I could have gone someplace else and started a whole new character, and part of that was a little exciting. And it’s way exciting to have other shows interested,” she said. “All of that love you get is really wonderful, but, at the end of the day, GH is my home. I feel I have been loyal to GH to a fault, but I am really happy with the way it worked out.”

But it sounds like she doesn’t want to go through that tumultuous contract negotiation again.

“It’s all good,” Herbst said. “But these past two months have been the most stressful time for me ever.”
