Why The Vampire Diaries‘ heartbreaking goodbye did Bamon justice

Sure The Vampire Diaries‘ Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) are end game, but that doesn’t mean that Damon won’t have any romance for the 60 or so years until she wakes up.

The show made that clear tonight with some developments between Bonnie and Damon, who have had fan-favorite chemistry since the end of Season 5, when they locked hands and entered the alternate world together.

Now, they are taking that chemistry to another level. Not by getting romantic with one another, but by getting even more emotionally invested in their friendship in Season 7. They’re at the “besties” phase now, you guys.

Bonnie saved Damon from Tyler in a friendship move that had Enzo all sorts of jealous. And from there, it’s all been uphill for these two former frenemies.

Of course, we now know — thanks to the time jump — that Enzo won’t have reason to be jealous for long, since he and Bonnie are apparently going to fall madly in love.

Still, it was a poignant moment on the show that led to an even more emotional scene tonight when Damon decided to sleep until Elena wakes up. In other words, he decided to slumber until Bonnie died. A move she is not happy about. Especially because Damon doesn’t age so it’s not like he’s going to lose out on any years with Elena if he stays awake.

I mean, unless Rayna or some other big bad gets mad and kills him, that is. Which could be a very good possibility since he’s good at making people mad.

And boy did he make Bonnie mad tonight.

“I am not OK with this decision. I’m not OK with you choosing yourself. And I’m not OK with never seeing you, my best friend, ever again… This hurts me. This hurts me,” Bonnie told him. “As you desiccate, and as you feel the pangs of hunger, as the blood drains from your body, that’s what I want you to remember: that you hurt me.”

Personally, I think this reaction was a little too harsh on the one hand. On the other, I get it. If my best friend told me she was going to sleep for a few decades so she could be with a guy instead of me, I would have some words. But I would also kinda get it.

Damon is miserable and destructive without Elena.

Yes, he has family and friends to keep him sane and level but it isn’t the wholeness he had with Elena.

Thankfully, we know what happens in the future, though, and Damon won’t really be sleeping for that long. But what will his decision do to his friendship with Bonnie?

Do you think Bonnie will forgive Damon for leaving her once he wakes up?
