Gwen Stefani is gone from The Voice but definitely not forgotten

The Voice is back and so is original judge Christina Aguilera. Viewers aren’t so sure that Aguilera’s return is a good thing — many would rather see Gwen Stefani alongside Pharrell, Adam Levine and, of course, Blake Shelton.

Believe it or not, this is the 10th season of The Voice! It’s been a bumpy ride, but along the way, America has discovered a few truly amazing gems, along with several amusing duds. As one of the original coaches, Christina Aguilera has spent a lot of time duking it out with Blake Shelton and Adam Levine — and she’s back for more. During tonight’s premiere, she made it clear that she’s once again ready to make her mark on the show.

Although many viewers are glad to see Aguilera back, several others are disappointed by the current lack of Gwen Stefani. Rumors indicate that she will eventually be back as a mentor for Team Blake, but until then, viewers are stuck with Aguilera. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but some annoyed viewers think that she’s too much of a show-off.

One of the biggest reasons viewers are bummed about the lack of Stefani is that there is no more flirting with Shelton. Or, rather, there’s no more female flirting with Shelton — the bromance was back in full force tonight. Shelton and Stefani’s evolving relationship made what could have been a very boring Season 9 interesting, because nobody ever knew quite what to expect. The Shelton-Levine bromance is always amusing, but after 10 seasons, it’s grown a bit stale. When Stefani inevitably returns, viewers can expect her and her beau to lay the PDA on thick.

More: The Voice needs to mix up its formulaic approach

Plenty of people were talking about Aguilera and Stefani on social media tonight. Reactions varied greatly, but most viewers seemed to think that Stefani’s departure was a bad thing. This is a far cry from late last season, when viewers were constantly complaining about Stefani’s seeming determination to turn certain contestants into mini-me versions of herself. A few Twitter users did speak favorably of Aguilera; these viewers felt that she added more of a fun vibe to the show and had better banter with the other coaches.
Love her or hate her, Christina’s back and she’s eager to find a champ. Who knows — it may finally be time for a female coach to emerge victorious.
