Brie Bella and her husband Daniel Bryan are speaking out about their decision to leave the WWE. Their reasons for leaving may come as a shock to fans, but the couple says that was deliberate. Bryan, who has suffered concussion-induced seizures, has begged his wife to keep it under wraps, but now feels it’s time to walk away.

The authenticity of wrestling has been debated over the years, but Bryan says there’s no question about it, “When you get slammed, you really get slammed.” All the years of being bashed around in the ring have caught up with him and have caused some major health concerns. When you listen to the couple talk about the seizures, you can’t help but sympathize with them. As expected, Bryan didn’t sound happy to be leaving the sport he loves, but he did sound content with his decision.

It’s probably especially important to get out now before any real damage is done, as Bella seems to have babies on the brain. Although her retirement date isn’t set yet, she says it is “very close” and will probably be this summer. Her reasons are less motivated by health concerns and more motivated by the urge to start a family.

Bella told E! Online last year, "I'm fighting my baby fever so bad. My boots aren't ready to be hung up quite yet in the wrestling ring but they're getting pretty close. All my friends and cousins are having babies and it’s hard not to want to join in on that."

You have to respect a couple who is willing to walk away from millions of adoring fans, a hit TV show and a professional athletic career for the greater good of their family. CTE and the risks associated with concussions have been on the forefront of many athletes’ minds lately, so hopefully Bryan can feel proud to blaze the trail for knowing when to walk away from the money and the fame and focus on what’s really important.

Something tells me this won’t be the last we see of Bella and Bryan. Maybe the couple can get their own series about life after the ring?
