Teen Mom stars have actually defied the odds
MTV's Teen Mom is filled with catfights, questionable parenting and tears, but there is also much more to this show than just drama, and these women have actually accomplished a lot that we may sometimes forget about.
It's easy to focus on the negatives, and when your life plays out on reality TV there are bound to be some (we know none of us are perfect, the difference is our mistakes aren't always captured on camera), but now it's time to take a look at some of the achievements of Teen Mom OGs.
Maci Bookout has graduated from college and now has a booming T-shirt company. Amber Portwood has cleaned up her life, started college and she's also trying her luck in the real-estate market. Say what you want about Farrah Abraham, but she, too, has her own company.
The significance of this, MTV notes, is that the women have all managed to overcome a lot and defied the odds. Being a teen mom must be unimaginably difficult, especially if you don't have the support of your family and your dreams have to be put on hold. According to the publication, "Only 38% of teen moms graduate from high school, and less than 2% of teen moms get a college degree by age 30" — which would have a dramatic effect on their earning potential.
Earning a stable income is no easy feat for most adults, let alone teens with babies to feed. And MTV's statistics prove this, because "67% of teen moms who live on their own live below the poverty level, and more than half of teen moms rely on public benefits within a year of giving birth."
It's important to realize just how unglamorous and how much hard work being a teen mom really is, and we're glad that these Teen Mom stars are at least transforming their lives, despite the odds.
