Scandal theories: What's in store next for Olivia and Fitz?
There are many things that could happen to Scandal's Olivia and Fitz when the show returns, but breaking up for good isn't one of them.
I think the show has definitely been building toward the demise of Olitz. At least, for now. There has been so much tension between those two lately, no wonder Olivia pulled out the moonshine.
Fitz got all insecure and controlling. Olivia was selfishly unable to compromise in any aspect of her life. Meanwhile, the world was trying to peek into their private lives while others like Mellie and Sally were trying to ruin their relationship before it even really got off the ground in the public eye. It was not a healthy combination.
But Olitz has seen worse.
Their love story, after all, began with an affair. And then Olivia went off with Jake for a while and yet Fitz and Olivia still managed to find their way back to one another.
Life is even more complicated than a relationship, and if you don't have your stuff figured out before entering into a long-term commitment, then it isn't going to end well.
Of course, Olivia's abortion was definitely a surprise tonight, but think about it: Does she even want kids? She wasn't ready to move in with Fitz, let alone have his baby. To me, that doesn't signal that something is wrong between them, but rather that Olivia has a lot of self-exploration she needs to do on her own.
This season, so far, she just really seems confused about everything. She's all over the place and has no idea what she wants.
I honestly think Fitz moving her into the White House wasn't meant as a controlling move, but was rather his attempt to give her some kind of new stability to figure things out.
But instead of working with him, she continually called Jake until he found out about her actions with regard to Eli and kicked her out of his life.
Tonight, when Olitz was breaking up, Olivia said there is no Vermont in their future anymore. But I think the big thing is that she doesn't want Vermont in her future anymore. I don't think she knows what she wants, but it definitely isn't the stereotypical fairy tale.
But I don't really think Fitz wants that either. After he retires from the presidency, it seemed to me, he envisioned the two of them carving out a life together without the pressure of rules and the public eye. No expectations but that.
And Olivia just needs to figure out her own direction before she can have another person join her on that path.
I still think Fitz is that man. And these two are endgame for one another. But I think, at least when Season 5 returns on Feb. 11, we'll see an Olivia who is trying to reestablish her independence. And not just an Olivia who is reestablishing her independence, but an Olivia who is reestablishing her identity for the sake of herself and no one else.
Then and only then can she and Fitz actually make their love work.
