Fans of The Voice were super bummed when Blake Shelton chose the familiarity of country crooner Emily Ann Roberts over the unique sound of Nadjah Nicole. Now, however, viewers are beginning to think that Shelton made the right decision.
It’s never easy to let a talented artist know that his or her journey on The Voice has come to a close, but this was especially difficult last week, when Shelton decided to let Nicole go. Initially disappointed by the loss of an amazing singer, Nicole’s fans were elated when Shelton selected her as his comeback artist.
The new comeback twist allows each of the show’s coaches to bring back one previously eliminated singer. If the comeback artists make enough of an impression on the show’s fans, they could potentially move on to the next round of the competition. With so many contestants already having been kicked to the curb, it’s a huge honor to be asked to return.
Grateful to have been brought back by Shelton, Nicole decided to sing the Diana Ross hit “Upside Down.” Adam Levine clearly approved of this selection; he told Nicole, “I love that song… thank you very, very much for that.”
Nicole was initially expected to blow the socks off of not only the coaches, but also her loyal fans, who blasted Shelton last week for letting her go. Unfortunately, Nicole’s song choice left her unable to truly show off her vocal versatility. Fans of the show found her performance surprisingly dull, which they were quick to admit on Twitter.
Although Twitter users weren’t exactly fond of Nicole’s song choice, they did voice their approval of her new look, which included a shiny dress and a very different hairstyle. Shelton joked. “I can’t believe how fast your hair has grown out since we rehearsed the song the other day.” Levine chimed in, claiming that Nicole looked and sounded beautiful.
Unfortunately, a hot new look and mild praise from the judges is not enough to keep a contestant in the running, and if the lukewarm response on Twitter is any indication, Nicole may once again be finished with The Voice. If she does get the opportunity to continue on in the competition, she will need to select a song that better appeals to her fans.
