A source explained to People that the couple’s diverging careers were a huge factor in their divorce.
“Everything about her emasculated him: She was beautiful, iconic, employed and the breadwinner,” the source, who People describes as “close to the couple,” said. “They were living off of her and that entitled him and it enraged him — there was a duality there.”
People reports that during their marriage, Berry worked on a total of six films and also had a network TV series, while Martinez only had guest-starring roles on four TV shows.
The two met on the set of their 2010 film Dark Tide, when Berry was already a Hollywood sensation and Martinez was a prominent French actor who was on the rise in the United States. But his career has yet to reach the status of Berry’s, and that reportedly threatens him, especially since she went right back to work on her TV show Extant after the birth of their son, Maceo-Robert.
Just months before the split, People reported from another source, “Olivier is complaining that he and Halle are not spending much time together and that she is working too much. He never wanted her to sign on for [Extant] and Olivier was hoping they would focus on family time together after Maceo was born.
“[Martinez] is not happy in the U.S. and he’s not happy with the state of his career,” People‘s source added. “He’s not happy she’s the breadwinner.”
