Yesterday, George Clooney and his wife, Amal Alamuddin, made headlines for adopting an adorable shelter dog named Millie, and now Jon Hamm is opening up about how his own pooch has changed his life.

Hamm adopted his rescue dog, a Shepherd mix named Cora, 12 years ago, and she has brought him endless joy.

"I went to see her with the idea of fostering her," Hamm told People magazine. "But after meeting her I knew I had to keep her."

"We think she was about one when we got her. She had all of her adult teeth but she was skinny," he recalls. "Now she has a little gray and probably going on 14. She's had a good long life and she is still going."

But it wasn't just Cora's life that changed for the better when she joined Hamm's household.

"It has changed my life in such a positive way," Hamm said. "Pets can bring to us a sense of love and pride and all of those wonderful things."

There are so many wonderful pets in need of a home — adopting one from a shelter should always be the first option — and this is something Hamm feels very strongly about, so strongly, in fact, that he has joined forces with to help raise awareness for shelter pets.

"I wish more people would take advantage of pet rescue," he said. "It's easy to do and inexpensive. Cora provides me with pure joy and love – and those are two pretty nice things to have in your life."
