Vikki Ziegler dishes on Khloé Kardashian's response to Lamar Odom's crisis
When news of Lamar Odom's coma first hit headlines, many fans were surprised to learn that his divorce from Khloé Kardashian had not yet been finalized. This left Kardashian eligible to make several major decisions regarding Odom's care. According to Untying the Knot star Vikki Ziegler, Kardashian's continued control over Odom's affairs could spark some major drama with her estranged husband's family.
Kardashian's continued sense of affection for Odom was a major storyline during the latest season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. As of a few weeks ago, fans thought that it would be best for Kardashian to move on. Now, in light of last week's medical emergency, Ziegler thinks she knows why Kardashian was so eager to remain close to Odom: Kardashian suspected that Odom was still engaging in the type of risky behavior that could land him in the hospital and force him to fight for his life.
During the latest Hollywood Hookups and Breakups podcast, Ziegler explained, "I think [Kardashian] knew this could have happened. I think she was always concerned... She still knew that he needed help and she still cared about him. I think you know, when somebody's a drug addict, it could be the last time you speak to them, ever. You don't want to hold that as your last memory and you never want to say that you gave up and you didn't try."
Ziegler was not exactly surprised when she learned that Kardashian was allowed to make all of the major decisions regarding Odom's emergency health care. She explained that it is not common practice to include medical directives in divorce judgments. "Unless you have a separate document during the marriage, the assumption is your spouse gets to make medical decisions on your behalf."
Critics have questioned whether Kardashian is the appropriate person to be making Odom's medical decisions. The two may not actually be divorced at the moment, but prior to Odom's health crisis, the intention was obviously to finalize their divorce. The only thing preventing them from actually going their separate ways was a backlog in the system. Thus, as Ziegler explains, a case could be made in favor of transferring control to Odom's father or his children. Odom's kids are underage, so if a transition did occur, it would likely involve ceding control to his dad. However, Ziegler believes that, if the issue had been taken to court, Kardashian "would have won."
