NeNe Leakes talks moving on from RHOA to becoming an LGBTQ advocate
After years and years on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, NeNe Leakes has decided to move on to other projects. The reality star recently chatted with SheKnows about her new life and her involvement with the LGBTQ community.
Leakes is loving life away from the drama of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. That doesn't necessarily mean she's done with the show for good; she's just relieved to be taking a break for now. Someday, if the conditions are right, she just might return. In an exclusive interview with SheKnows, Leakes explained, "I'm not saying I'm never gonna be a Housewife again, I just needed a break."
If she does come back to RHOA at some point, Leakes looks forward to once again traveling all over the world. "I miss the international trips... that was really great. [Bravo] would give us an international trip every year or so. I miss that."
She also misses "some of the girls" from RHOA, although she's certainly happy to have a few gals (ahem, Kenya Moore) out of her life.
Leakes might not be ready to return to RHOA just yet, but until then, she has plenty of other exciting projects in the works. For example, she just "finished up To Tell the Truth on ABC with Betty White... it's an old show that has been revamped."
Additionally, the reality star is involved with the Lip Sync Battle, hosted by LL Cool J. Neither of these are exactly reality shows, per se, but they're as close to reality TV as Leakes is willing to get for the time being.
Another source of excitement for Leakes? Her growing role in the world of fashion. The reality star told SheKnows, "I've been recurring on Fashion Police. That's been really good. I love that because I'm a designer myself on HSN, and my new line is out right now. People can shop HSN.com and check out all my new fashions."
When she's not promoting her fashion line or hanging out with White and LL Cool J, Leakes is busy being an advocate for the LGBTQ community. She recently was involved in the Barefoot Wine Bear Garten Pride Party in Atlanta, and, shortly before the event, she told SheKnows, "We're going to have a show tonight with drag queens, so it's gonna be amazing. We'll have wine tastings... I've always been a real supporter of Pride... I'm really happy to be a part of it for Barefoot Wine."
In addition to chatting about the recent Atlanta Pride event, Leakes claimed that the momentum surrounding the movement was "amazing... really amazing," particularly when the big U.S. Supreme Court decision took place a few months ago. The reality star also shared her thoughts on Caitlyn Jenner's transition:
"When I really look at the whole story, I feel like she must have been trapped for so long, to not be able to live out who she was. That's just saddening, you know? She had to wait so many years before she could come out, and that's really sad. But she's a beautiful woman. When I look at her and look at her story, I just think it's sad that somebody had to be trapped and not be able to be who they really want to be," she says.
All in all, Leakes is happy with her numerous television gigs and her role as an LGBTQ advocate. RHOA won't be quite the same without her, but who knows — she might be back sooner than fans expect.
