Gotham foreshadows a bloody future, but who will die next?

It looked like all of the familiar Gotham characters were finally in place, in particular Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) — the evil jokester who didn’t hesitate to kill — in the role of the Joker. We even got a peek into how he became a bad guy.

But the last few minutes took a shocking twist when philanthropist Theo Galavan (James Frain), who was responsible for breaking Barbara, Jerome and the rest of the Maniax out of Arkham Asylum, became Gotham‘s newest hero by killing Jerome on live TV.

Twitter had mixed feelings about the death.

But as foreshadowed by Jerome’s father, whom he killed and framed for the Arkham Asylum breakout, that wasn’t the last we’d seen of Jerome’s evil spirit. As TVs broadcast him on the news, TV viewers laughed manically, ending in what seemed to be a murdering madness that would be a “curse on the city.”

Adding to the drama is what seems to be a bizarre love triangle between Galavan, Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) and Galavan’s sister Tabitha (Jessica Lucas).

Theo’s betrayal of Jerome, plus his and his sister’s protectiveness over Barbara, makes us wonder what he’s really after. Gotham executive producer Danny Cannon told TV Guide in August that we have yet to see what Theo has in store for Gotham.

“Theo Galavan arrives in Gotham as a prodigal son returning, He comes from a very wealthy family with ancient roots in the building and foundation of Gotham. It takes a while for us to understand why he came back to Gotham and what his plan is, but it’s an insidious one, obviously. He’s a little bit like the Great Gatsby and Dracula coming to town with money and influence and charm and trying to bend to Gotham to serve him.”

Gotham airs on Mondays at 8/7 c on Fox.

What else do you think Theo has planned for the city? Do you think Jim will find out he was involved before it’s too late?
