Selena Gomez's purity ring confession earns a rude response
Selena Gomez is once again facing unfair backlash over her purity ring.
The 23-year-old singer sat down with the U.K. Sunday Times and opened up about her years-long relationship with Justin Bieber, during which she removed her purity ring.
"I didn't think I was doing anything bad by falling in love," she said. "There's such an emphasis on people being the perfect thing and then destroying them because it's good press. Throw in the fact that you're a teenager — it makes it more difficult."
Gomez and Bieber began dating in 2010 and broke up, they say for the last time, earlier this year. Gomez started wearing her purity ring when she was 13 and said she was judged by fans and media outlets when she removed it during her relationship with the Biebs.
Ultimately, though, Gomez explained, the ring just wasn't for her.
"I'm not embarrassed to say that," the singer explained. "I'm also not embarrassed to say that the ring has come off. I got it when I was 13 and I respect so much what it represented, but it isn't for everyone."
Following that admission, people on social media again bashed Gomez for opening up about her purity ring.
But Gomez deserves more slack than that. Teenage years are a very confusing time and we can't blame her for changing her mind about something personal, like her sexuality. At the end of the day, Gomez made that decision for herself. It's her right to do so and the haters shouldn't be so quick to judge.
