Jennifer Beals is the latest subject of citizen vigilantism after leaving her dog in the car while she ran errands. Is what she did really all that bad when you consider the whole situation?
The L Word star was running errands in West Vancouver, and when she returned to her car, she discovered her dog, who she left in the vehicle with the windows down, had an audience. One witness was videotaping the pooch, and another called her out for endangering the dog — and even said he was calling the police.
Beals thinks the whole furor was much ado about nothing, and in a statement on her Facebook page she defended her actions, saying that the weather was balmy, the windows were open, she was only gone a few minutes and her dog was in her sight at all times.

But a lot of people aren’t buying it. A spokesperson for the SPCA said that while they won’t be filing charges against the star, she should take this as a learning opportunity.
“The temperature is warm. I think this is an education opportunity. I don’t doubt that she loves her dog and I very much appreciate her comments around caring for her animals,” Marcie Moriarty told Vancouver’s NEWS1130, adding that a dog’s cooling system works differently than a human’s and the situation could have gone wrong in as little as 10 minutes.
“I think this is an opportunity to highlight, for conscious animal lovers, that they need to make other provisions in this heat. She probably shouldn’t have been running [to get] her dry cleaning with her dog in the car.”
