Tina Fey is joining the revolution of women who are making sure their voices are heard.
And no, we’re not talking about new-age feminism here.
We’re talking about the way Fey stripped down to her custom David Letterman Spanx in honor of the Late Show host’s upcoming retirement.
“I realized that when you retire, this is it. Like, I’m never gonna wear a fancy dress on a talk show again,” she told Letterman. “First of all, it’s very hard work. I don’t know if you’re aware of the contraptions under here. It’s almost medical.”
The former Saturday Night Live actress put her money where her mouth was, too, by showing everyone just what she was packing underneath her pretty blue dress. And to make the strip-down moment even more magical, Letterman was there to assist her with the zipper.
Of course, the cherry on top of Fey’s strip-down was that her Spanx were custom, just for Letterman. The front read “Bye, David,” while she sported “#LastDressEver” on her behind.
She continued, “I dress up like this out of respect for you. I really do. But this is it. Am I gonna put a dress on for Jimmy [Fallon]? That’s creepy. He’s like my brother. Am I gonna wear special underwear for James Corden? That’s not gonna happen.
“Because this is my last time wearing a fancy dress on a talk show and conforming to gender norms, out of respect for you, my gift to you is, I want to give you the dress.”
Fey’s bold gesture left Letterman speechless, but he was a total gentleman the entire way through, even kissing Fey’s hand at the end of the segment.
