Country music artist and actress Reba McEntire has had tremendous success throughout her career. She had her own TV show, Reba, starred in the TV series Malibu County and her clothing line with Dillard’s is now 10 years old and has expanded to luggage, accessories and other products.
But this time, she decided to give back.
“I’m not the ‘thinker-upper,'” she says. “I’m the type to go do it when somebody tells me to. I’m an executor. I’m gonna go do it. So when I find projects like this I really like to sink my teeth into it.”
General Mills, Big Machine Label Group and Feeding America launched their fourth annual Outnumber Hunger campaign. To help raise awareness, McEntire became the face of the campaign. She will be featured on General Mills packages, including Cheerios and Yoplait. On each General Mills product, there will be a code that can be entered at Outnumber Hunger through Jan. 21, 2016. For every code entered, five meals are secured for a local Feeding America food bank.
McEntire will kick off the campaign with a special concert featuring songs from her album Love Somebody, and some of her old classics. Other artists will be featured in the concert as well, and she brought them together through social media.
McEntire also challenged others, including her daughter-in-law Kelly Clarkson, to help out.
“Well, Kelly is my daughter-in-law, and I like to throw it out there: I challenge you to be a part and help out. Now she will go to other folks and do the same and it kind of snowballs, and it helps,” Reba said.
In addition to her busy career, McEntire has six grandchildren from as young as nine months to 22 years old, but she doesn’t claim to be the “doting grandma” of Kelly’s grandchildren.
“I’m not the doting grandma like my sister and my sister-in-law are, but I do love to hang out with River Rose; she’s adorable. River is a great travel child — she loves to tour, and she loves to be with her mom and go on tour all the time, so she’s a good kid,” McEntire added.
She also shared her advice for women trying to succeed in any male-dominated industry, saying, “Give it your best shot. Find that great song that touches your heart and that people can relate to. It has to do with the songs.”
