James Franco has opened up in a big way about his sexuality, and his response on the subject is definitely worth sharing.

Franco has been asked countless times whether he’s gay or straight and the rumor mill will not give it a rest. So, of course, when the actor was asked to interview himself for an upcoming edition of Four Two Nine magazine, he pointedly asked himself, “Are you f***ing gay or what?”
And his response to his own question is amazing.
“Well, I like to think that I’m gay in my art and straight in my life,” the actor said. “Although, I’m also gay in my life up to the point of intercourse, and then you could say I’m straight. So I guess it depends on how you define gay. If it means whom you have sex with, I guess I’m straight. In the twenties and thirties, they used to define homosexuality by how you acted and not by whom you slept with.”

He continued, “Sailors would f*** guys all the time, but as long as they behaved in masculine ways, they weren’t considered gay.”
It’s also obvious this is a topic to which Franco has given a lot of thought. And his response, however cheeky it may be, rings as true. Franco is sending a positive message out there that sexuality is a spectrum, not an either or. And everyone defines it a little differently.

This isn’t the first time Franco has opened up about his sexuality. During an interview last year with the Daily Beast, Franco said, “Bring on the gay jokes! Because these aren’t insults at all.” Franco also added that he wished he were gay and he isn’t offended at all when people suggest it.
