Empire wants Oprah, like, really bad

This season, Empire quickly became a smash hit for Fox and with the end in sight, fans can’t help but guess at what’s in store for next year. It turns out that showrunners are still figuring that out, and one key deciding factor is whether Oprah will appear on the series.

In case you didn’t know, Empire was co-created by Lee Daniels who previous did The Butler, in which Oprah Winfrey starred. Now that he’s got a new gig, it sounds like the showrunner is hoping to pull strings and bring in his new buddy, Winfrey.

“I’m wearing her down!” Daniels told The Hollywood Reporter of his efforts.

Is he, though? During the same interview with THR, Winfrey seems not just unsure about a guest appearance, but rather adamant that it just won’t happen.

“I tell him, ‘Lee, it’s not enough that you’ve taken every viewer possible on Wednesday night, now you want me to leave my own network?'” Winfrey said.

It doesn’t sound promising for Daniels, and we don’t blame Winfrey in the slightest for feeling apprehensive. First, we’re sure there are legal issues involved with jumping networks. Most importantly, though, Winfrey is still a huge commodity. Daniels was already lucky enough to nab her once, for The Butler. Asking her to appear on Empire seems downright greedy. And, it’s not exactly like he needs Winfrey for a ratings boost: Empire is killing it. It’s one of the highest-rated Fox shows and has quickly become one of our favorites.

Will Winfrey return to network television at Daniels’ requests? We loved to watch it, but we have out doubts. What do you think?
