Sister Wives star, Kody Brown, and his four wives stirred up quite the controversy this week when they announced that Kody was divorcing wife No. 1, Meri, so he could officially marry wife No. 4, Robyn.

But if you are caught up, you know the Browns released a full statement saying that they made this decision as a family unit and, though they are reorganizing their home, they are all still sticking together.
1. There is trouble in the polygamist paradise
One fan on our article page hilariously referred to Kody as “the traveling penis,” saying that his supposed marriages are just excuses for him to legitimize his affairs. Once he’s bored with one wife, he can move on to the next.

This seems to be the most popular opinion from critics of the show and the Browns’ lifestyle.
2. It really is for the sake of the children
As the Browns are saying, according to TMZ, Kody wants to make sure all of his children are provided with health care. His blood-relation children all receive benefits, but Robyn’s three children from her previous marriage do not. By marrying Robyn, Kody can officially bring those children into the fold so they can receive health care.
3. It’s a custody battle rather than an insurance issue
One follower suggested that Robyn’s ex-husband wants custody of their three children and doesn’t like his children being raised in a polygamist environment. Since polygamy is illegal in the United States, he may actually have a valid argument. But by officially marrying Robyn, Kody and the rest of the ladies can help solidify the children’s standing within their home.

4. Meri actually facilitated the divorce
Another commenter on our original article thought that perhaps it was Meri who wanted out. After all, she no longer has any kids left at the house and she has talked on the show about wanting to go back to school. Now that she has no official ties to Kody as wife No. 1, she can live her life how she chooses and not have to worry about any of the legal issues that may come up with Kody’s other ladies.
