One thing a lot of teenagers can’t do? Parallel squat 145 pounds.
But 17-year-old Joy-Anna Duggar has set the bar pretty high for teens everywhere by doing just that, beating her previous weight record for parallel squats. The problem? The internet can’t seem to see her awesome fitness goal because of the clothes she wore when she achieved it.
In the video, taken and posted to Instagram by big sis Jessa Duggar Seewald, we see Joy-Anna lifting the 145 pounds pretty easily… in a skirt. She’s doing something totally awesome that, let’s face it, many of us couldn’t do, but the fact that she did it in a skirt is inciting outrage? Come on, people.
We know modesty is a big thing for the religious, conservative Duggar clan. Family matriarch Michelle shared her thoughts on the silly controversy, saying, “[We] felt like we needed to be covered from our neck to below our knees mainly because God talks about the thigh being uncovered, and how that’s nakedness and shame.”
She continued, “I realize that you can’t keep somebody from having wrong thoughts, but I do think you have control at least on how you present yourself. So as the older girls and guys grew up they became sensitive to their clothing choices. The girls would say, ‘Do you think this is too low-cut or should I put a pin here? Or what do you think about this? Is this too short?'”
Luckily, some online commenters are coming to Joy-Anna’s defense, calling out the commenters who seem to think it’s more important to pay attention to her clothes than her weightlifting skills.
“Please. . Do not even pull that argument that you can’t work out in a skirt,” one commenter says. “I did for several years. I only wear dresses/skirts and I went to the gym before I got married. I assure you.. It never got caught on anything!”
Do you agree that we should stop focusing on Joy-Anna’s clothes and pay attention to her success? Or do you have a different take? Tell us in the comments below.
