The photo of Willow Smith on a bed with 20-year-old actor Moises Arias has certainly raised a few eyebrows, but now the whole family is under investigation.

Of all celebrity families, we never thought we’d see the Smith household in this kind of trouble. But ‘tis so. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are under investigation by the Los Angeles Department of Children & Family Services after a sorta sassy photo of their 13-year-old daughter, Willow, on a bed with 20-year-old actor Moises Arias went viral on the Internet.

While Pinkett Smith brushed off the hubbub regarding the photo last week, saying there was “nothing sexual” about the shot, the Los Angeles authorities clearly saw it a little differently. The Smith couple are reportedly very accommodating with the investigation but in no way ecstatic about it.
“The investigation was formally opened last week and is being taken very seriously by the department. Will and Jada Pinkett Smith have been extremely cooperative with officials. Of course, they aren’t happy that their parenting skills are under scrutiny, but they understand,” a source told RadarOnline.
The report of the opened investigation has some folks split on the great Internet, with one faction applauding the quick reaction of the Los Angeles Children Services and with another faction calling it bull-hockey that is strictly motivated by the family’s celebrity status. It’s a tough call to make. . .
Is it justified?
To be frank, there is no sexual contact between Willow and Moises in the “incriminating” photograph. The 13-year-old is fully dressed and is simply lying next to Arias. The big question is, why is she on a bed with a shirtless 20-year-old? And, more importantly, where were her parents when this shot was taken?
It’s not that Willow can’t be friends with older people (even of the opposite sex), it’s about negligence. As outsiders, we obviously don’t know the story behind the photograph, but it is conceivable that Willow’s parents permit her too much liberty and that she spends a vast amount of time with adult. . . thereby creating a “hospitable” environment for illegal sexual contact. We’re not saying this is true, but this may have been a motivator for the investigation.
The other side of this fence is obviously the Smith family’s celebrityhood. While the photo may be cause for an investigation, would it be treated with the same rigour if it featured a non-famous 13-year-old? Probably not.
The fact that it depicts Will Smith’s daughter with a 20-year-old actor and it was spread through the Internet quicker than Skittles at a tween’s birthday party is probably why it caught the eye of the Los Angeles authorities in the first place. While we’d like to think that this investigation is unbiased, we’re almost certain there are hundreds of lewder photos involving minors out there, none of which are under investigation.
Perhaps the circumstances of Willow’s photo should be called into question; we are simply venturing that it may be directly tied to her celebrity status. What do you think? Is the investigation fair or is it publicity driven?
