It pays to be a loser at the Oscars

It turns out no one is really a loser at the Academy Awards, since celebrities without an award receive a goodie bag worth $80,000! Seriously.

Leonardo DiCaprio

This year’s Academy Awards ceremony is sure going to be a real nail-biter. But fear not, even if your favourite star does not get a golden statuette, they shan’t be forgotten!

It turns out that while Oscar winners receive fame and glory (plus a little naked golden dude on a pedestal), the losers walk away with just a pathetic goodie bag filled with $80,000 worth of swag… Oh wait, what?

Oh yeah, you read that right. Per press release, Los Angeles-based company Distinctive Assets has been offering swag to Oscar “losers” for the past 15 years in the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Director categories. Past recipients of the little El Dorado of goodies include Hugh Jackman, Helen Mirren, Amy Adams and Meryl Streep. Leonardo DiCaprio must have a storage room full of these goodie bags, since he’s on his fifth Oscar nomination without a single win.

So what is this magical bag filled with? Some donations made on the star’s behalf, chocolates, watches, wine, handbags, makeup, spa treatments and fitness lessons… The usual. Hey, we suppose if millions of people are going to watch you lose a coveted award, you deserve a little somethin’-somethin’.

Still, we can’t help but think of all of those impoverished and low-income families in the States who could use $80,000 in their lives, and no one is rushing to hand it to them. Yet celebrities — with millions of dollars to their name — are rewarded with a luxurious goodie bag for simply losing an award. Seems a little unbalanced to us.

Maybe we’re just crazy! What do you think of this goodie bag business?
