We were very inspired by the latest scandal: Patrick Stewart was falsely labelled gay by The Guardian. So, we’ve compiled a list of other celebrities, who’ve found themselves in the same predicament.
That’s a fun rumour to wake up to! The Guardian must have forgotten to proofread their paper before publication, since they mistakenly identified Patrick Stewart as a gay man in their Ellen Page coming out article. For the record, he is straight.
The newspaper quickly issued an apology and amended the original article on their website with a statement:
“This article was amended on 17 February 2014. The third paragraph originally said ‘Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page’s coming out speech is newsworthy’. This should have read ‘Some people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page’s coming out speech is newsworthy’.”
We bet Stewart did not expect to be falsely outed by The Guardian, but the 73-year-old actor was a real champ about and even cracked a few jokes on Twitter.
Oh, we love him! But while on that note, let’s take a look at a few other people who have been surrounded by gay rumours but are actually straight. None of these rumours were published in The Guardian, at least!
Jude Law has been the centre of gay rumours for a while now and for various reasons. His slender figure, perfect coiffure and perceived sassiness gave plenty of ammunition to the tabloids. Alas, those rumours were momentarily hushed when he cheated on Sienna Miller with his children’s babysitter. Yowza.
Despite being married several times and dating a handful of women, Eddie Murphy was rumoured to be gay for many years. Even after impregnating Spice Girl Melanie Brown and denying being the father. And after getting married again. He’s still not out of the rumour pool.
This is not surprising. Every boy band in history was rumoured to be gay. . . We’re not quite sure how people can make such blanket statements about an entire collective, but they do. Thus far, no member of One Direction has come out. But there’s still time!
These rumours obviously started when Lindsay Lohan started dating Samantha Ronson around 2007/2008. The couple later broke up and Lohan has not shown any interest in another woman since. But the rumours persist. We’ll leave this one unconfirmed.
Well, after Brokeback Mountain came out, all eyes were on Jake Gyllenhaal. Alas, the actor is not gay and has a very lengthy resume of past heterosexual relationships. Mostly with models. You like what you like, right?
Who would you add to the list?
