The Master snubbed at the Venice Film Festival?

Well, at least the film wasn’t ignored. The Master, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman, was left without grand prize Golden Lion despite contrary predictions.

It appears The Master is not harbouring any hard feelings after the Golden Lion was pulled out of its reach at the 69th Venice Film Festival.

The film, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Laura Dern, picked up the Silver Lion for Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson and Best Actor for Hoffman and Phoenix, but was not awarded the Golden Lion for Best Picture.

What gives?

The jury awarded the grand prize to Korean Kim Ki-duk’s Pieta because new festival rules dictate that a single film cannot snatch up more than two major awards. Well, that does sound fair and guarantees maximum foreign film exposure. But how does the film’s cast feel about this ruling?

“I’m thrilled with whatever they want to hand over. I heard the scuttlebutt recently, but I’m thrilled with whatever we got,” Anderson stated during a press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival. “It was amazing what happened in Venice… They gave it to both of the boys, which is amazing.”

Glad to hear there’s no bad blood. The Master is scheduled for release Oct. 12. It’s rumoured to be based on Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and the creation of a fictional cult.
