The film was postponed for several years and has undergone a few changes, but it’s definitely happening. Actress Zoe Saldana has been signed to play Nina Simone in an upcoming biopic.
The Nina Simone biopic is coming to life at last! Zoe Saldana has signed up as the lead in Nina, while David Oyelowo will play Simone’s manager, Clifton Henderson.
The film has been in the works for several years and even had Mary J. Blige attached to playing Nina, but it was shelved for a while due to funding issues. The project will be directed by Cynthia Mort, who’s famous for her work on Roseanne and Will & Grace — and also kind of known for dating Jodie Foster, but that’s another story.
Production of the film should begin in Los Angeles on Oct. 16.
Nine Simone was, of course, the legendary singer and civil rights activist who rose to prominence in the 1950s and ’60s. She branched out into several genres of music, from jazz to R&B, in her long and prosperous career. Simone was an avid speaker for racial equality, and many of her songs were heavily influenced by the prejudice in the U.S. at the time.
A film celebrating the persistence and inspiration of Nina Simone would definitely be a must-watch. Sounds like an Oscar winner to us. Plus, Zoe Saldana strangely resembles Nina, in a way we have never noticed before.
