It’s not that we’ve never seen a wardrobe malfunction at an award show before… it’s just that we can’t say we’ve ever seen one quite as funny as Wyclef Jean’s jacket gaffe at the 2014 American Music Awards.
I mean, we get it — being introduced as a “bona fide reggae legend” likely stacked on some added pressure during Jean’s performance of “Rude” with Magic!
Perhaps it was nerves that led the singer to get his arm stuck in his jacket for nearly a full minute of the performance.
Naturally, the gaffe didn’t go unnoticed. The Twitterverse quickly went to work pointing out the #malfuncjean.
Jean confirmed the wardrobe struggle backstage, saying it went fine in rehearsals. Hmm, perhaps we can pinpoint the problem. Let’s take a look, shall we?
“Let me just slip off my biker jacket so I can really dig into this performance.”
“What the? I just… can’t… seem… to get it off my arm.”
“Maybe if I just spin a little on the spot, it’ll come loose.”
“Imma just roll with this for a minute.”
“This shit did not happen in rehearsals.”
“Maybe if I keep my arm behind my back, no one will notice there’s a biker jacket stuck on it.”
“Bro, quit singing at me and pull my arm out of this damn jacket.”
“Seriously? That’s how you’re going to play it?”
“It’s OK, it’s OK… I’m making this work.”
“Hey, drummer man, get this jacket off my arm. C’mon, man, no one will know you missed a beat.”
“Hold on… Imma be right back.”
“This is really happening.”
“I’m gonna need somebody to get my publicist on the phone.”
“I’m stepping on my jacket. I’m stepping on my $700 leather biker jacket at the motherf***ing AMAs.”
