Will TLC cancel 19 Kids and Counting due to LGBT 'fear-mongering'?
19 Kids and Counting's Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar have 8,000 critics and counting, all of whom want to see the Duggars' controversial reality show taken off the air.
An online petition posted to change.org asking TLC to cancel the show is gaining momentum and had collected more than 8,000 signatures by Tuesday night. It accuses Jim Bob and Michelle, the patriarch and matriarch of the Duggar clan, of "fear mongering" with their openly anti-LGBTQ sentiments.
"The Duggars have been using their fame to promote discrimination, hate, and fear-mongering against gays and transgendered people," a letter addressed to TLC attached to the petition reads. "You need to take a stand on the side of justice and cancel their show."
The petition itself claims that Michelle has been calling households in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with a recorded message urging citizens to stand up against a city council proposal that will give equal housing and employment rights to LGBTQ individuals. It says Michelle compares gay, lesbian and transgender people to child molesters and rapists, and contends the equal protection ordinance affects "the safety of Northwest Arkansas women and children."
"Duggar words reek of ignorance and fear-mongering," the petition reads. "Just because someone is transgendered doesn't mean they are a child predator or a rapist. The claim that this ordinance would provide predators with access to women's restrooms in order to assault or leer at girls or women is nothing more than fear-mongering and spreading ignorance and hatred."
With more than 8,000 signatures, the petition is at nearly 10 percent of its goal of 100,000. The petition's sponsor, Jim Wissick, also claims some of the Duggar children, especially Josh Duggar, are involved with "hate-filled, anti-gay organizations," including the Family Research Council, which was named a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center in 2010.
