6 Thoughts about Kathy Griffin replacing Joan Rivers on Fashion Police
When Joan Rivers, the matriarch of Fashion Police, passed away, the future of the show was uncertain. But it looks like E! is very much trying to continue the show and it has a surprise name as the front-runner to replace the comedy icon.
Kathy Griffin confirmed to Access Hollywood that she was offered Rivers' role on the show.
"I don't know if the situation is correct at this time for me or right for me at this time," Griffin said. "I really hope they continue in the spirit of Joan's work. She brought a fearlessness and a brand of humor into our homes that we really need."
On Wednesday, Nov. 19, a TMZ report said those connected with the show have confirmed Griffin will be joining the show.
The show has confirmed it will be back in January in time for awards season, and it will need a strong personality in the lead seat. So, is Kathy Griffin a good idea for the role? Here are some thoughts:
1. Kathy Griffin is enough like Joan Rivers to make a smooth transition
Although Rivers and Griffin have slightly different comedy styles, they are strong women in comedy — and not afraid to make fun of anyone or anything if it means a laugh. But this leads to another problem...
2. Kathy Griffin may feel obliged to bash celebs in the name of Joan Rivers
Rivers was never afraid to say what she thought, but she usually had a reason for it. If Griffin takes the role, she may feel obliged to bash, bash, bash. She would have some big shoes to fill and that may lead to a lot of bad decisions.
3. Griffin is not exactly a fashion connoisseur
Even though the comedian has filled in as a red carpet host, she has never seemed to have a hold on the fashion itself. She is normally there to offer comedic relief, but not much else.
4. Will Kathy Griffin know her stuff?
No. 3 leads to the question of Griffin's knowledge on the subject. Will she do enough research to know what she is talking about? Will she begin to dress better?
5. How does Melissa Rivers feel?
Joan Rivers' daughter hasn't spoken much since her mother's death, but the former on-the-carpet partner of Joan Rivers is sure to have an opinion on replacing her mom. Was she hoping to be chosen? She likely feels that her mom is irreplaceable, but will she be OK with the choice?
6. She may be the best person for the job
Although hiring a fashion expert may seem like the obvious choice for E!, the show just wouldn't be the same. Because they have plenty of fashion experts on the show currently, maybe all they really need is comic relief? Kathy Griffin has a strong fan base and it may be similar enough to Joan Rivers' fan base to make her the right person for the job.
